For the past 17 years, I worked in tertiary education, in a range of roles from teaching to executive management. As a result, I have an in-depth understanding of both academic and corporate operations and governance from start-ups to multinational corporates across ELICOS, VET and Higher Education sectors in a wide range of discipline areas and industries.
A significant part of my education management experience has come through interactions with the Australian regulatory bodies and government agencies. My relationships with these bodies and agencies has taught me that, despite the cliché, they are indeed ‘business partners’, and my working philosophy is to foster a collegial relationship with them, especially in customising governance frameworks and policy to individual providers.
The same can be said of my approach to working with education business owners; to be collegial, provide timely and accurate information through agreed reporting structures, and to provide meaningful advice relevant to ongoing strategic and business planning.
Finally, many of the roles and projects I have undertaken along the way have been somewhat ‘gnarly’. External audits of high risk providers, accreditations of courses which were previously sacred cows of public universities, offshore registrations, multi-jurisdictional strategic planning, and re-structuring organisations have all provided me with exceptional challenges and valuable insights.
